Slavery still exists.

We partner with local justice officials, community partners, advocates and people like you to protect the world’s most vulnerable people.

The Problem

Slavery is illegal almost everywhere. But millions of men, women and children are trapped in modern-day slavery around the world. In India, entire families are enslaved in labor trafficking in brick kilns, rice mills, and garment factories working up to 20 hours a day. In Romania, women are tricked into sex trafficking with false promises of a loving relationship or a good-paying job. In the Philippines, children as young as two are sexually abused live for anyone in the world to watch through online exploitation of children.

We work to protect people in poverty from violence and slavery. Here are the forms of injustice we currently address:

Forced Labour Slavery

Forced Labour Slavery uses deception, threats or violence to coerce someone to work for little to no pay.

Forced Online Scamming

A new, brutal form of slavery is rapidly spreading. Right now, thousands of victims are being tricked, trafficked, trapped in guarded compounds and forced to scam people like you and me, under the threat of brutal violence.

Sex Trafficking

Sex trafficking is a form of modern slavery in which someone deceives and sexually exploits another person for profit.

Online Sexual Exploitation of Children

Children are sexually abused by traffickers who then spread or sell images or videos of the exploitation online—even livestreaming the abuse for sex offenders to direct from anywhere in the world.

Violence Against women and Children (VAWC)

Women and children experience crimes, including rape, sexual assault, molestation and other forms of sexual abuse.

Our Solution

Think of the justice system as a pipeline. Where systems are broken, people who live in poverty are not safe. The UN estimates that nearly five billion people live outside of the protection of the law. Many justice systems are broken, corrupt, under-resourced and overworked.

arrow-long-right Injustice

We don’t stop at rescuing and restoring people who have been abused. Our goal is to prevent the violence from happening in the first place. IJM partners with governments and organizations around the world to serve individual survivors of violence, pursue sustainable improvements in the justice system and build communities where all people can expect to be safe and protected.

We focus on four areas of development that are proven to bring transformation that lasts:

Icon Bring Criminal To Justice

Strengthening Justice Systems

We collaborate with local governments and community leaders to respond effectively to violence. Together, we equip them with the tools they need to serve survivors, deter criminals and dramatically decrease violence.

Bring Criminals to Justice

We work alongside justice system officials to ensure that criminals are held accountable, stopping the cycle of violence and deterring others from abusing vulnerable people.

Rescuing and Restoring Victims

We partner with local authorities to rescue individual victims of violence and restore survivors to safety and stability.

Scaling Demand for Protection

We convene and equip champions to advocate for protection as an essential and tangible future for everyone.
